Juneteenth: My Story of Freedom and Access
In celebration of Juneteenth, Colorwave champions the dual themes of Freedom and Access by highlighting the importance of choice in career paths and the ability to generate wealth without restrictions.
After transitioning from my last job, I was looking for a program to help me find my next opportunity, especially knowing I wanted to make a career transition. Through networking with several folks who had gone through Colorwave and connecting with a staff member, I knew Colorwave would help me transition. The curriculum and network have been invaluable. It helped me better market myself to potential employers and better understand where my skill set could add value to early stage companies. But beyond the curriculum, the people are amazing! Because the program is national and so many people come in with such unique and diverse backgrounds, I was exposed to people and careers I did not previously know about. I cannot count the number of times I have reached out to Colorwave alumni or vice versa and they are always willing to take the time to connect, send jobs or opportunities that may be a fit, or provide support during what can be an emotionally grueling process.
Colorwave has been instrumental to my career exploration. Events such as office hours with VCs, startup and VC mixers, and happy hours have allowed me to build relationships that I otherwise would not have. From these relationships, I have been able to explore my career interests in venture capital and company building. It provides a safe place to ask the questions you really want to know and network in an organic way.
The highlight for me is the people and network. I cannot count the number of times that I received a random message saying “hey I saw this opportunity and it sounds like something you may be interested in”. I love the fact that this community really is about supporting one anothers’ journeys. I know if I send an email to a Colorwave alumni, they will respond. I know if someone sends an email to me, I would respond as well gratefully. It is that reciprocity and spirit that allows this community to be so active and important to our individual growth professionally and personally.
